Things to do in Pingyao

One of China’s famous four ancient cities, the ancient city of Pingyao has been beautifully preserved. The city was the financial center of China and its architecture and design reflects this. Pingyao is filled with incredible sites. The city has around 4,000 residences from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties. There is something for everyone in this amazing city.

Cuisine:
Pingyao is famous throughout China for its cuisine. With a long history, Pingyao has a large variety of traditional local dishes found nowhere else. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the city of Pingyao was home to some of the richest people in China. They could afford to spare no expense and their cuisine was testament to this.
Pingyao Beef is one of Pingyao’s most famous and best loved dishes. It dates back over 2,000 years and is considered one of the symbols of the city. Legend says that a butcher had some beef that had gone bad. He didn’t want to throw it away, so he covered it in salt and boiled it. He was amazed to discover that the beef had become incredibly delicious and tender. Today, of course, only fresh beef is used.
Wan Tuozi is another famous Pingyao dish. It is a steamed bread dish which made from buckwheat flour, mixed with salted water and rape seed oil. The dough is then steamed and can be served either cold, or fried with potatoes.

Nightlife:
Pingyao has a hopping nightlife that has something for everyone’s tastes. Visitors can find a spot that suites their taste, from hopping nightclubs, to peaceful tea houses. The ancient city has many bars, cafes, late night restaurants as well. These are all great places to spend your evenings.
