Xiamen City in Fujian Province boasts a wide gulf with deep water but without freezing and silting. So, the city name was given which means 'a gate of China'. Xiamen is a very vibrant, affluent and modern place. It has several universities and some areas popular for tourism. The most important tourist area is Gulangyu, a small island close to downtown which contains some beautiful colonial buildings and is car free. Other sites include Sunlight Rock, Haoyue Park, Shuzhuang Garden, Nanputuo Temple and so on.
