Wugong Temple
Located 5 kilometers from Haikou City in China’s Hainan Island, Wugong Temple was originally built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It has been renovated several times and the current architecture was built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
The temple occupies an area of 2,800 square meters. The main building of the temple is the Wugong Hall. It is considered architecturally the most important building in Hainan. It was built to commemorate five famous government officials who were banished to Hainan Island during the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) Dynasties. Inside the hall are stone statues of the five officialsas well as a stone tablet carved with calligraphy from Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty.
Inside the temple complex are several small courtyards which are built like gardens. They add to the beauty and peaceful atmosphere of the Wugong Temple. It is a wonderful place to enjoy a little peace and tranquility during a Hainan tour.
