Zhenguo Temple Pingyao
Zhengguo Temple is about 10 kilometers away from the northeast of Pingyao, in the village of Hadongcun Shanxi province. The temple was originally built in 963 in northern Han dynasty which was part of the Five Dynasties (907 - 960), and renovated in 1816 during Qing dynasty. Zhenguo temple is an important part of Pingyao world heritage and major historical & cultural site.
The temple contains two main halls and a gate, and a wall surrounding the whole complex. Tian’wang Hall is the temple’s gate with the bell and drum towers at each side; to the north is the Wanfo Hall and final hall is called Sanfo Hall, which built in Qing dynasty. And the Guanyin Hall and Dizang Hall could be dated back to Ming Dynasty.
Wanfo Hall(ten thousand hall) is the oldest hall in the temple, could be dated back to Northern Han dynasty, featuring very large brackets that hold up the roof and flying eaves. It is one of the China’s oldest wooden buildings. The main structure of the hall is supported by twelve pillars. The hall contains eleven sculptures from the Northern Han period. These are the only Chinese sculptures from the period that survive from outside the Mogao Grottoes. There is a main statue of Sakyamuni flanked by Bodhisattvas and the Heavenly Kings.
