Huanghuacheng Great Wall

Located in Jiuduhe Town 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Beijing, the Huanghuacheng Section of The Great Wall is known for its natural beauty and the distinct changes that come with each season. This section is unique in that it is divided by three lakes.

Built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), by general Cai Kai, this section of the wall is very well built. On a cliff near the wall are carved two Chinese characters “Jin Tang”, which mean Very strong and firm. According to legend, they were carved in honor of general Cai Kai. This section of the wall took a long time to build due to the terrain and the Emperor became anxious and corrupt government officials told the emperor that General Cai was stealing the money to be used in its construction and so the emperor had him beheaded. Later, after the Huanghuacheng Section was inspected by the Emperor, he found that he had been unjust and had these two characters carved into the mountain to remember General Cai Kai. As a result, this section is often known as the Jingtang Section.

There are some unique aspects of this section that deserve visitation. Located near the base of the wall is the Chestnut Garden which was built during the Ming Dynasty. The ancient chestnut trees are still thriving after so many centuries. Also located at this section is the Yaoziyu Castle. Built during the Ming Dynasty, the castle is in a remarkable state of preservation and located in the castle is an ancient scholar tree, which is believed to bring you luck by touching it.
