Mutianyu Great Wall

Famed for its stunning natural beauty, the Mutianyu Section of The Great Wall was originally built in the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-557) and was rebuilt several times, the last time being during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Located 75 kilometers (45 miles) from Beijing, the Mutianyu Section of The Great Wall is 2.25 kilometers (1.4 miles) long and winds through incredible scenery. The section follows along the lofty granite mountains in the area.

Many parts of this section were made of the local granite, making them virtually indestructible. The Mutianyu Section is 4 to 5 yards wide and 23 to 26 feet high. This section of the wall is unique because both the inner and outer sides of the wall have parapets to defend against enemies. Some of the parapets are saw-toothed in shape, as opposed to the normal square shape. This section has 22 watch towers located close together.

The area around this section is particularly beautiful. Over 96% of the area is heavily wooded and each season has its own unique appearance. In the spring, the mountains are covered with wild flowers and in the summer, they are covered with grass. In fall, the trees are heavily laden with fruit and when the leaves turn, the area is particularly beautiful. In the winter, the area, covered with snow is particularly beautiful.
