Located in Dazu County, the Dazu Grottoes, are located 167 kilometers from Chongqing and are located in several different sites. Carving began in 650, in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) through the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The grottoes feature over 5,000 statues and over 100,000 characters. The grottoes have Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian carvings, with Buddhist carvings being the dominant type.
The Dazu Grottoes are located in five different locations in Dazu County. Each site has its own unique features.
Beishan
The statues in this section of the Dazu Grottoes are in a remarkable state of preservation and they are elaborately carved. The most famous is the statue of the Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, known as ‘The Oriental Venus”.
Baodingshan
This section has thirteen groups of carvings with almost 10,000 statues. The figures compose a story.
Nanshan
This section is primarily Taoist in design. The carvings are very vivid and beautifully crafted.
Shizhuanshan
There is a niche containing a statue Confucius and Lao Tzu here. Buddhist, Confucious, and Taoist statues are integrated in this section, making it a very unique area.
Shimenshan
This section combines Daoist and Buddhist imagery with Taoism being the predominant theme. The statues have inscriptions beside them. Their carving is lifelike and very vivid. Filial Piety is the main theme of this section
The Dazu Grottoes were listed on UNESCO World Heritage List in Dec.1st, 1999.
