Located in the Pudong Area in Shanghai, the Shanghai World Financial Center is a skyscraper which is home to offices, hotels, shopping malls, and observation decks. Construction of the building began in August of 1997 and was opened for business in August of 2008. The building is 494.4 meters high from the ground to the top of the antenna spire, making it the tallest structure in China. It has 101 floors and 91 elevators. The Shanghai World Financial Center has the highest occupied floor and the highest roof heigh in the world. The Park Hyatt Shanghai occupies the 79th to the 93rd floors making it the second highest hotel in the world. The highest observation deck, at 474 meters above ground level is the tallest observation deck in the world.
Construction
The Shanghai World Financial Center’s cornerstone was laid on August 27th, 1997, but construction was halted due to the Asian financial crisis of 1997. Construction began on November 16th, 2003. At this time, the original design was altered to raise the height of the building by 32 meters. The original foundations that were completed in 1997 were utilized in the new design. The final girder was installed on September 14th, 2007 and the final outside cladding was installed in June 2008 and the building opened for business on August 28th, 2007.
Architecture
The Shanghai World Financial Center’s most distinguishing feature is the square opening at its peak. The top of the opening features as the highest observation deck of the building at 474meters above ground level. The building has three observation decks. The 94th Floor’s observation deck is 423meters above ground level and the 97th floor, named the Observatory Bridge, is 439meters above ground level. The 100th floor observation deck is 474meters above ground level. The observation decks can be reached by elevators connected to the ticket area located under the ground level. Elevators whisk visitors to the 94th floor Observation deck. An escalator can be taken to the Observatory Bridge from the 94th floor and an elevator travels from the Observation Bridge, to the 100th floor. The ceiling of the Observatory Bridge is glass, which allows visitors to look up at the bottom of the 100th floor observation deck. The floor of the 100th floor observation deck is made of glass giving visitors an exciting view down into the building’s opening.
