Feilai Peak
Located in Hangzhou in China’s Zhejiang Province, Feilai Peak is a very famous mountain which is located next to Ling Yin Temple. There are many legends pertaining to the mountain. According to legend, the peak got its name from a Buddhist Monk from India. He came to the area 1,600 years ago and saw the mountain. The mountain did not fit in with the surrounding mountains. It was totally unique. It looked just like the mountains in his home back in India and he believed the mountain had flown over from India, so he named it “Feilai Peak”, which means “flown here” peak.
The surrounding mountains are made of sandstone, but Feilai Peak is made of limestone. It is 209 meters tall and has several caves inside of it. Over 330 Buddhist statues have been carved inside the caves, dating back to the 10th to the 14th centuries. The statues, it is said, were carved to keep the mountain rooted in its current location.
