Shaanxi Provincial Museum
Xian was the capital for 13 Chinese dynasties for over 1,100 years, making it an incredible place for history lovers. The Shaanxi Provincial Museum showcases this history. Located northwest of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the museum occupies an area of 65,000 square meters and has the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The main building is two stories tall and many smaller pavilions are distributed around it. The exhibitions are first-class and on par with any museum anywhere in the world.
The Main museum building is home to the No.1, No.2, and No.3 exhibition halls. The No.1 Exhibition Hall, on the first floor, displays artifacts covering the period from 1.7 million years ago to 206BC. On exhibit are stone tools, pottery bronze vessels, weapons, and terracotta figures. The No.2 Exhibition Hall, located on the second floor covers the period from 206BC, through 589AD. The hall exhibits terracotta figures, bronze vessels, stone statues, and calligraphy. The No.3 Exhibition Hall, on the second floor, covers the period from 589AD to 1911AD. This hall features a model of Xian, during the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) Dynasties as well as pottery figures, porcelain ware, and gold and silver objects.
To the west of the main building is the Theme Exhibition Hall. Occupying an area of 2,500 square meters, the hall’s exhibitions are temporary and change periodically. The East Exhibition Hall exhibits temporary exhibits.
