Grand Canal
The Grand Canal runs from Beijing to Hangzhou. It is the longest man-made river in the world, ten times longer than the Suez Canal and twenty-two times longer than the Panama Canal. For over 2,500 years, the canal has been a major shipping artery in China. It was built to connect the capital of China with the rest of the country. The Suzhou section of the canal is particularly beautiful. It passes by ancient houses, shops, and garden areas. Most visitors to Suzhou take a cruise down the Suzhou section. It is a peaceful cruise and a nice break on a Suzhou tour.
