The Pan Gate
Located in Suzhou, the Pan Gate is one of the only remaining examples of a ‘land and water gate’ in China. Originally part of Suzhou’s Ancient City wall, the gate has two entrances, one for land traffic and the other built over the river, for goods entering the city via boat. The gate was originally built during the Warring States Period (475-221BC). It was rebuilt in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). The Pan Gate is the centerpiece of a large scenic area which is home to many gardens, ponds, traditional Chinese architecture, and the ancient Ruiguang Pagoda, the oldest pagoda in Suzhou.
